Milgard Windows and Grids: Enhancing Style and Curb Appeal
Before we get into the below, we need to address how Milgard SunCoat and SunCoatMAX glass affects the grid appearance. SunCoat & SunCoatMAX is Milgard Window’s trade name for Low E. Low E Coatings are on surface 2 to of the glass. Surface 1 is the pane of glass that is outdoors and the panel you would clean if you’re outside washing your windows. Surface 2 is the other side of that glass. So, it’s on the back side of surface 1 in-between the dual paned unit. Hopefully you can visualize the above. Low E will give either a green or grayish green hue viewed from the exterior. When looking out the windows from the interior they will be clear. So, the Low E is one way. When you have Grids Between Glass (GBG) they are behind the green hue and thus are not as bright because they have a tint in front of them and this changes the color a little bit.
A couple more things to keep in mind when deciding which grids and where to put them for your Milgard windows. If you have white shutters behind a white grid then they tend to get lost. If you want you’re your grids to stand out then choose Simulated Divided Lite Grids (SDL). SDL are slightly different looking in each line of the Milgard Window product line. Make sure to look at what you’re getting carefully. GBG will be easier when washing the window because the grid is between the glass and SDL will be a little more difficult because the create individual boxes on the exterior and interior of the glass.
Okay now let’s talk grids.

The Impact of Grids on Curb Appeal
Adding grids to your Milgard windows is a simple yet effective way to enhance your home’s exterior. Here’s how grids contribute to curb appeal:
- Architectural Consistency: Grids can preserve the authenticity of home styles such as Colonial, Craftsman, or Tudor.
- Enhanced Visual Interest: They can break up large glass panes, adding detail and sophistication.
- Framed Views: Grids can subtly frame interior and exterior views, creating a visually pleasing effect.
- Boosted Home Value: Well-designed grids can increase a home’s perceived value, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
With a variety of grid styles available, homeowners can choose a design that suits their personal taste while enhancing both the interior and exterior aesthetic of their home. Milgard windows offer the flexibility to achieve the perfect balance between beauty and functionality. The trend today is less is more. In general, when a home has grids, it is usually in the front of the home to enhance curb appeal and the patterns have very few grid lines. The most popular design that we are seeing the past several years is the cross design which is 2 wide by 2 high per panel of glass.
Hope this helps.
